Last night (July 16), the Glengarry Soccer League's extreme heat policy came into effect again, forcing the postponement/cancellation of a slate of scheduled minor matches, affecting all 6:30 p.m. starts in the U10 boys, U10 girls, U14 boys, and U19 girls divisions. Games with 8:30 p.m. starts went ahead, as did action in the ERSL (Glengarry Hearts).

The 40th Annual Great Raisin River Footrace is just over a month away, scheduled for Sunday, August 12, in Williamstown.
Early registration for the 11 km and 5 km races, at a discounted rate, is available until July 14, online at raceroster.com/16814
New this year, to mark the event's long tenure, the first 300 participants will receive a commemorative Ed Whitlock medal.
As well, the footrace convenors Sheila and Wendell Lafave have organized a Saturday evening clinic, where Roger Robinson, who's been described as the "world's best running historian," will talk about Whitlock. He will also draw from his latest book. This session will take place in the ballroom of the Sir John Johnson Manor House, in Williamstown.
The Sunday morning runs (starting at 8:30 a.m.) begin and finish on the grounds of the Manor House. Both the 5 km and 11 km course are out and back along a scenic, flat country road, along the south side of the Raisin River.
A kids fun race is also scheduled. This is a 150-metre event for children under 10 years of age (who are not running the 5 km race). Children will receive a ribbon and a treat. No pre-registration is required.
Entry fees for the 11 km and 5 km events, respectively, are $25 and $20 until July 15, $30 and $25 from July 15 through August 9, and $35 and $30 on race day.
The Lafaves have announced, after 11 years at the helm, this will be their final time organizing the Footrace. New convenors have yet to be confirmed.
On July 21 at the beach in Charlottenburgh Park, Serving Kindness, a volleyball tournament, will be held.
Colton Gallant and his committee have been co-ordinating this event with Lissa Deslandes, of the Raisin River Conservation Authority, aiming for a successful inaugural tourney. Proceeds will be divided up and donated to different families in the area who are currently experiencing financial hardship.
The cost per team is $200 (6-12 players), and this is also a co-ed tournament, with each team required to have a female on the court at all times. As of this posting, eight teams have signed up.
DJ Poswah (Eric Laszewski, 28, Cornwall) has kindly agreed to spin tunes throughout the day.
Teams and individuals are also encouraged to book a campsite, stay the night, and support Charlottenburg Park.
The event logo was created by Colton’s older sister, Caitlyn Gallant, who also came up with the names.
For more information, visit the Facebook event page or call Colton Gallant at 613-360-8800.

The winner of the tourney advances to represent Ontario at the national senior Little League tournament.
In an effort to make up matches postponed from earlier in the week due to extreme heat, the Glengarry Soccer League has been trying to make them up over the course of the weekend.
Tonight, July 8, there are youth matches at the U10 boys, U10 girls, U14 boys, and U19 girls levels, as well as tier 2 men's.
Sunday is traditionally a day of rest in the GSL regular season.
We will have more details in the next edition of The Glengarry News.
Usually a quiet night on area soccer pitches, this week will be decidedly busier as the Glengarry Soccer League strives to catch up on some matches postponed due to extreme heat in recent days.
The youth action tonight, July 6, includes games in U12 boys, U14 girls, and U16 boys divisions.
For the adults, there's a senior women's match on the Dunvegan field, featuring Laggan and Vankleek Hill, at 8:30 p.m.
Also at that time, there are two senior men's games on tap. In Greenfield, the hosts will entertain Glen Sandfield, while on the Lochiel field, McCrimmon and Dunvegan will be playing.
More games this weekend
Saturday night, usually an off night, will have U14 girls and U16 boys games
Sunday evening features U10 boys, U10 girls, U14 boys, U19 girls, and tier 2 men's matches.
For the second straight night, and third evening of the last four, the Glengarry Soccer League is having to postpone/cancel scheduled youth soccer matches due to extreme heat.
Here's today's announcement:
